The film was released on September 28, 2012 in the United States and received positive reviews from critics, who praised the humor, the performances, and the musical numbers. The film was a sleeper hit at the box office, grossing over $115 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. It became the second-highest-grossing musical comedy film of all time, behind School of Rock. The film also received several awards and nominations, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Kendrick and a Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

The film spawned two sequels: Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) and Pitch Perfect 3 (2017), as well as a spin-off series titled Pitches (2021). The film also inspired a reality television series called Sing It On (20152016), which followed collegiate a cappella groups across the United States.

Plot

Beca Mitchell (Kendrick) is an aspiring DJ and music producer who reluctantly attends Barden University at the insistence of her father (John Benjamin Hickey), a professor at the college. She is uninterested in joining any clubs or making any friends, until she meets Chloe Beale (Snow), a senior and one of the leaders of the Barden Bellas, an all-female a cappella group. Chloe convinces Beca to audition for the Bellas after hearing her sing in the shower. Beca joins the Bellas along with several other misfits: Fat Amy (Wilson), a confident and hilarious Australian; Cynthia-Rose (Dean), a closeted lesbian; Stacie (Knapp), a highly sexualized girl; Lilly (Lee), a quiet and eccentric beatboxer; and Jessica (Kelley Jakle) and Ashley (Shelley Regner), two generic girls who are often ignored.

The Bellas are led by Aubrey Posen (Camp), a perfectionist who wants to redeem the group's reputation after she vomited on stage during their performance at last year's national finals. Aubrey insists on sticking to their traditional repertoire of female pop songs, which Beca finds boring and predictable. Beca also clashes with Jesse Swanson (Astin), a freshman who joins the Barden Treblemakers, the Bellas' rival group and three-time national champions. Jesse is friendly and upbeat, and has a crush on Beca. He tries to get her to open up to him and to watch his favorite movie, The Breakfast Club, which she has never seen.

The Bellas and the Treblemakers both qualify for the regional competition, where they face off against other a cappella groups. Beca suggests that they spice up their routine by adding some mash-ups of modern songs, but Aubrey rejects her idea. During their performance, Beca improvises by adding a rap segment to "The Sign", which angers Aubrey but impresses the audience and the judges. The Bellas advance to the next round along with the Treblemakers.

At a celebratory party, Beca and Jesse bond over their love of music and end up kissing. However, Aubrey interrupts them and berates Beca for disobeying her orders. She also warns Beca not to date Jesse, as it is against the rules for Bellas to be involved with Treblemakers. Beca storms off and ends her friendship with Jesse.

As the Bellas prepare for the semi-finals, Beca tries to apologize to Jesse but he ignores her. She also tries to make amends with Aubrey by presenting her with a mix CD of potential songs for their performance. Aubrey listens to the CD but remains unconvinced. She accuses Beca of being selfish and not caring about the group. Beca decides to quit the Bellas and focus on her dream of moving to Los Angeles.

At the semi-finals, the Bellas perform a medley of songs by Ace of Base, which fails to impress the judges and the crowd. They are humiliated by the Treblemakers, who perform a dynamic rendition of "Right Round". The Bellas are eliminated from the competition, while the Treblemakers advance to the finals.

Beca's father finds out that she has quit the Bellas and is planning to drop out of college. He tells her that he will not pay for her to go to Los Angeles unless she finishes her year at Barden. He also encourages her to make up with Jesse and the Bellas, saying that she will regret it if she doesn't.

Beca realizes that he is right and reconciles with Jesse, who forgives her and tells her that he loves her. She also returns to the Bellas and apologizes for letting them down. She convinces them to give her another chance and to try something new for their performance. The Bellas agree to follow Beca's lead and to work together as a team.

The Bellas manage to get back into the finals by taking the spot of another group that was disqualified for having a professional singer. They face the Treblemakers and another group, the Footnotes, at Lincoln Center. The Footnotes perform first, followed by the Treblemakers, who deliver a confident and flashy performance of "Bright Lights Bigger City" and "Magic". The Bellas then take the stage and surprise everyone with a stunning mash-up of songs, including "Price Tag", "Don't You (Forget About Me)", "Give Me Everything", "Just the Way You Are", "Party in the U.S.A.", and "Turn the Beat Around". The mash-up ends with Beca finally watching the final scene of The Breakfast Club on a large screen behind them, as Jesse joins her on stage. The audience and the judges are blown away by the Bellas' performance, which showcases their individuality and talent.

The Bellas are declared the winners of the competition, becoming the first all-female group to do so. They celebrate their victory with a group hug, while Jesse kisses Beca. Aubrey praises Beca for her leadership and creativity, and passes on the captainship of the Bellas to her. Beca accepts and thanks Aubrey for everything she has done for the group. The film ends with a montage of photos and videos showing the Bellas' friendship and success.
